Thursday 10th December: 'The Reawakening of the Medieval Church'

Date: Thursday 10th December 2015

Time: 7.15pm

Venue: Billiard Room, Landithy Hall, Madron

‘Cornish Medieval Churches’ Course

The Penwith Points of View project in Madron will finish in February 2016 and we complete our series of courses and lectures with a course that is very appropriate just before Christmas – ‘Cornish Medieval Churches’ with Dr Joanna Mattingly beginning on the 26th November.

  • Thursday 26th November: ‘The Making of the Medieval Cornish Church’ the development of church plans and fabric from the Normans to the Perpendicular period,
  • Thurs 3rd December: ‘The Breaking of the Medieval Church’ – the impact of the Reformation – Cornwall’s unfinished medieval churches.  Why were so many Cornish churches still being built as the Reformation unfolded?
  • Thurs 10th December: ‘The Reawakening of the Medieval Church’ or what the Victorian restorers discovered when they stripped away whitewash, dismantled box pews, rebuilt walls and dug up floors.

Dr Mattingly says, ‘Cornwall’s Medieval churches are rarely simple structures that nestle into the landscape, but complicated, and often incomplete, buildings whose histories can prove hard to unravel.  Come and learn more.’

The ‘Cornish Medieval Churches’ series of lectures will take place in the Billiard Room, Landithy Hall, Madron and will begin at 7.15pm.

All events are free to attend and please spread the word to your organisation’s members and others who would be interested.

Venue: Landithy Hall, Madron

Last year the Penwith Points of View Project held a popular Cornish Wrestling exhibition in conjunction with the Cornish Wrestling Association and we are doing the same again this year on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November. There will be talks from Gerry Cawley and Dr Mike Tripp on both days, information about the history of the sport and even more opportunity for children and young people to have a go this year. The amazing thing about Cornish Wrestling is that it is a direct living link with our ancestors handed down through an unbroken chain, from father to son, brother to brother and friend to friend for over 3,000 years.  For the children taking part and learning some basic techniques they will be part of this link.

The exhibition will be held from 10.30am until 3.30am on both Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th in the Billiard Room, Landithy Hall, Madron.  It is free to attend and refreshments will be provided, so please come along to support Cornwall’s oldest national sport.
