A New Pevsner for Cornwall

In 1950 the story has it that the late Sir Nikolaus Pevsner was sitting on the beach at Daymer Bay on the north coast of Cornwall contemplating the splendid view. After a while he announced his intention of walking to the little church of St Enodoc. This he did and as a result of what he saw he determined to write a book on the buildings of Cornwall. It was published in 1951. It was seen as something of a trial run for a whole series of books on the ‘Buildings of England’. Good though it was, much was left out, for example: Victorian churches, chapels, private houses and buildings associated with mining. A new Pevsner for Cornwall is in the process of being researched and is due for publication in 2008. The Trust has been instrumental in raising funds needed from within the County and is also acting as ‘banker ‘for the project.

The Boulton & Watt Archive

The Boulton & Watt (Wilson Papers) are contained in an archive of 1,100 documents bound in eleven volumes. Held by The Cornwall Record Office since 1969, they were the property of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and in 2003 they were put for public auction by the Society to Bonhams of London. Interest in the archive was world wide. Approached by the County Archivist at the time, Mr Paul Brough, the Chairman of the Trust was asked to help mount a bid for Heritage Lottery Funding to save the archive. The Chairman and Trustees readily agreed. Mr Brough made a successful bid at the auction and the archive was saved for £556,650. The Heritage Lottery’s contribution was £511,356, the balance was found in the County. The Archive was returned home to Cornwall – thanks to the good offices of the Trust and all concerned and is now available on line.
