SUMMARY:Wassail!
DESCRIPTION:Help awaken our newly planted ‘Avallan Rubi / Ruby Orchard’ from its winter slumber and scare away any ‘evil spirits’ that may prevent a good harvest this Autumn. \nThe Cornish Wassail dates back beyond the 14th century. Help us keep this ancient tradition alive in Duloe!\nDate: Tuesday 20th January\nTime: 3.45pm–5.30pm \nLocations:   \nDuloe Jubilee Village Hall\, Duloe\, Liskeard\, PL14 4PA\nWhat3Words: ///chariots.coats.pirates \nDuloe Stone Circle\, Duloe\, PL14 4PN\nWhat3Words: ///energetic.narrates.scornful \nPrice: FREE \nEveryone is welcome to join us in encouraging a good harvest by waking the apple trees and toasting them with cider. \nDress up and bring along anything to make an ‘infernal noise’\, such as a musical instrument\, pots and pans\, or just your voices and good cheer. Wellies and torches are also recommended. \nThis event is a collaboration between Cornwall Heritage Trust and Liskeard Old Cornwall Society. \nOn the day\nThe festivities will start at Duloe Jubilee Village Hall at 3.45pm. Mulled apple juice and saffron buns will be served. \nWe will then parade to the monument\, carrying anything we need to make a ruckus and awaken the trees. Traditional Cornish music and dance will be led by Merv and Alison Davey. \nParking\nParking is available on the roads around the village. \n \n\nAbout our ‘Avallan Rubi / Ruby Orchard’ \nThe orchard has been planted at the north-east end of the field\, where the Duloe Stone Circle stands. We hope it will increase biodiversity on the site\, become a focus of local festivities and produce apple crops which our charity will use at our annual Allantide events. \nIt includes a wide range of Cornish Heritage varieties\, including Ben’s Red\, Cornish Queen\, Manaccan Primrose\, Hocking’s Green\, Cornish Aromatic\, Cornish Pine\, Tregonna King and Cornish Gilliflower. \nThe trees were planted by our Ranger team in December with the support of local schoolchildren and volunteers. The pupils also enjoyed a classroom-based workshop as part of this. \nThe project was funded by Cornwall Council’s Forest for Cornwall Programme and Cornwall Community Foundation through the Caradon Area Community Fund.

SUMMARY:Volunteering Opportunity - Cornwall Heritage Trust Ranger Day
DESCRIPTION:Cornwall Heritage Trust’s Ranger Days are an exciting programme of practical volunteering opportunities at our heritage sites around Cornwall. \nTaking place at Duloe near Liskeard\, this session will involve tree planting. This work has been informed by an ecological survey of the site\, which was made possible by funding from the Banister Charitable Trust. \nWork such as this is a vital part of helping us protect these ancient monuments and the natural habitats that they are part of\, and we are hugely grateful for any support you can give. \nNo experience is required and support and equipment will be provided. \nAlthough we are keen to accommodate all offers to volunteer\, on some occasions we are restricted to the number of volunteers that can participate on site. Places in these instances will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. \nClick here to register your interest \nhttps://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/TheCornwallHeritageTrustLimit/duloeranger.html

SUMMARY:Tool Sharpening Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to sharpen and care for your countryside maintenance tools with Jeremy Weiss\, a traditional rural services and training specialist.\nDate: Friday 21st November \nTime: 9 – 4pm\nLocation: Botho at Geevor Tin Mine\, Pendeen\, Penzance \nPlease use the following Google Pin or What3Words for directions…\nGoogle Pin:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/Z53dbrv8XZo1Vkka8 \nWhat3Words: /// inventors.flash.allies \nPrice: £50 per person  \nPlaces on this workshop have been subsidised thanks to funding from the Tanner Phoenix Trust. \n\nDuring this workshop\, attendees will learn how to profile and shape the blades of bill hooks or axes so that they will function at their best\, cutting materials at the proper angle. A bill hook is a versatile cutting tool used widely in agriculture and forestry for cutting woody material such as shrubs and branches. This skill will allow attendees to restore old bill hooks or prepare new bill hooks for use. They will also learn how to hone the edge to ensure that tools are suitably sharp and ready for correct usage.\nOnce the tool is ready\, attendees will be making brash bundles\, known as faggots\, which provide the ideal situation to practice basic bill hook cutting and trimming techniques and become familiar with this tool.  \nPlease bring your own axe or bill hook if you can. If you are not able to\, tools will be available to borrow and work on. What to consider when buying a bill hook will be discussed during the course. \nPlease bring your own lunch and drinks\, as well as ensuring that you wear weather-appropriate clothing. \n\nAbout the instructor\nJeremy Weiss has been working with hedges for over 25 years. He is an experienced instructor having taught courses for the National Trust\, Dartmoor Hill Farm Project\, Devon Rural Skills Trust and for his own business\, ‘Proper Edges’. He has a first-class honours degree in Environmental Science and a very keen interest in ecology\, conservation and traditional countryside management.  \nPlenty of parking is available at the front of Botho. \nThis event is in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust.

From here\, you can board the minibus shuttle service to reach the site. \nAbout the event\nLocated just off the A30 near Bodmin\, Castilly Henge is believed to have been built during the late Neolithic period (about 3000 to 2500 BCE). It is a substantial oval earthwork with an external bank and internal ditch\, which would have formed an amphitheatre-like setting for gatherings and ritual activities. Its significance continued into the Early Bronze Age (c.2400-1500 BCE) when several high-status burial mounds or barrows were built close by. \nPrevious researchers have suggested that the site might have been used as a medieval open-air theatre known as a plen-an-gwari and then as a battery during the English Civil War. \n \nThe dig has been informed by aerial\, earthwork and geophysical surveys undertaken by Historic England’s Archaeological Investigation Team as part of a previous project in 2022. This found traces of a now-removed possible stone circle in the middle of the henge. Not all henges contain stone circles\, and there is only one other known to survive in Cornwall. \nThe Open Day is your chance to have never-before-seen access and insight into this special place with activities including… \n\nSee the archaeology which has been uncovered in the trenches\nMeet the volunteers and archaeologists who have been working at the site\nExplore the site with Dr Olaf Bayer\, Senior Archaeological Investigator at Historic England\nExperience the ancient art of flint knapping with Devon and Cornwall Bushcraft\nCreate a cyanotype print with Cornwall-based contemporary artist\, Robin James Sullivan\, and add it to our large-scale willow stone sculptures\, similar to those that may have been present at Castilly Henge during the Neolithic period\nBuild your own stone circle to take home\nListen to stories of Neolithic life with Multivax\nLearn more about Cornwall Archaeological Society\nGet a taste of historic food with Cornwall Heritage Trust’s Countryside Rangers\n\nThe excavation is funded and directed by Historic England. This Open Day and associated outreach activities have been made possible by a £42\,990 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to Cornwall Archaeological Society and a £10\,000 grant from Historic England. \n\nThis project is a collaboration between… \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n  \nMade possible by funding from…

SUMMARY:A Cornish Story Café - Enemy of My Enemy: Vikings and Scandinavian Settlers in Early Medieval Cornwall
DESCRIPTION:Whilst our Cornish Story Cafés do often sell out\, we do still have tickets available on the door for tonight’s talk if you would like to come along.\nDate: Tuesday 23rd September\nTime: 6.30pm – 7.30pm (Doors open from 6pm)\nLocation: Saltash Guildhall\, Fore St\, Saltash PL12 6JQ – What3Words:///baths.haggling.skewing   \nPrice: Pay as you feel (£1\, £5 or £10) \nJoin us at Saltash Guildhall for a special talk by historian and author\, John Fletcher\, on the relationship between 9th Century Cornwall and the Vikings. \nAt the start of the 9th Century\, the Kingdom of Kernow\, which had been under increasing pressure from the westward expansion of Anglo-Saxon Wessex\, found itself with new allies from an unexpected corner. Viking longships\, sailing from newly established bases around the Irish Sea\, brought new settlers\, new opportunities for trade\, and much-needed military support. In 838 AD\, a combined force of Vikings and Cornishmen faced Egbert of Wessex at a place known as Hingston Down\, the first recorded example of a Viking force allying with a local British power.   \nIn this talk\, John will discuss this battle in detail – why the location often cited might be incorrect\, how its aftermath potentially shaped the modern border between Devon and Cornwall\, and the evidence we have for an ongoing and long-lived Scandinavian presence in Cornwall during the Early Medieval period. \nJohn has a specific interest in the period between the 5th and 11th Centuries in Cornwall and Devon. His first book\, The Western Kingdom: The Birth of Cornwall was published in 2023. He has been an Early Medieval reenactor for nearly 20 years\, with much of that time being focused on recreating life in 8th–11th century Cornwall and Devon. \nThe talk is pay as you feel with tickets priced at £1\, £5 or £10. Tea\, coffee and saffron buns will be served. \nNumbers are restricted and places are available on a first-come-first-served basis. \nPlease be aware that John will not be attending the event in historic costume.  \nCornwall Heritage Trust is photographing and recording the event and may publish these photos and videos in a variety of media and online. \nThis event is in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust. \nParking\nParking can be found at Alexandra Square Long Stay Car Park (approximately 2 minutes walk from the Guildhall) or Culver Road Car Park (approximately 4 minutes walk from the Guildhall). Parking is free after 4pm. \nWhilst our Cornish Story Cafés do often sell out\, we do still have tickets available on the door for tonight’s talk if you would like to come along.
