SUMMARY:A Cornish Story Café - Enemy of My Enemy: Vikings and Scandinavian Settlers in Early Medieval Cornwall
DESCRIPTION:Whilst our Cornish Story Cafés do often sell out\, we do still have tickets available on the door for tonight’s talk if you would like to come along.\nDate: Tuesday 23rd September\nTime: 6.30pm – 7.30pm (Doors open from 6pm)\nLocation: Saltash Guildhall\, Fore St\, Saltash PL12 6JQ – What3Words:///baths.haggling.skewing   \nPrice: Pay as you feel (£1\, £5 or £10) \nJoin us at Saltash Guildhall for a special talk by historian and author\, John Fletcher\, on the relationship between 9th Century Cornwall and the Vikings. \nAt the start of the 9th Century\, the Kingdom of Kernow\, which had been under increasing pressure from the westward expansion of Anglo-Saxon Wessex\, found itself with new allies from an unexpected corner. Viking longships\, sailing from newly established bases around the Irish Sea\, brought new settlers\, new opportunities for trade\, and much-needed military support. In 838 AD\, a combined force of Vikings and Cornishmen faced Egbert of Wessex at a place known as Hingston Down\, the first recorded example of a Viking force allying with a local British power.   \nIn this talk\, John will discuss this battle in detail – why the location often cited might be incorrect\, how its aftermath potentially shaped the modern border between Devon and Cornwall\, and the evidence we have for an ongoing and long-lived Scandinavian presence in Cornwall during the Early Medieval period. \nJohn has a specific interest in the period between the 5th and 11th Centuries in Cornwall and Devon. His first book\, The Western Kingdom: The Birth of Cornwall was published in 2023. He has been an Early Medieval reenactor for nearly 20 years\, with much of that time being focused on recreating life in 8th–11th century Cornwall and Devon. \nThe talk is pay as you feel with tickets priced at £1\, £5 or £10. Tea\, coffee and saffron buns will be served. \nNumbers are restricted and places are available on a first-come-first-served basis. \nPlease be aware that John will not be attending the event in historic costume.  \nCornwall Heritage Trust is photographing and recording the event and may publish these photos and videos in a variety of media and online. \nThis event is in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust. \nParking\nParking can be found at Alexandra Square Long Stay Car Park (approximately 2 minutes walk from the Guildhall) or Culver Road Car Park (approximately 4 minutes walk from the Guildhall). Parking is free after 4pm. \nWhilst our Cornish Story Cafés do often sell out\, we do still have tickets available on the door for tonight’s talk if you would like to come along.

SUMMARY:Bronze Age Sword Casting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Suitable for those aged 16 and over\nJoin Dr James Dilley\, an experimental archaeologist and craftsman\, to cast your own sword and learn more about how they were made in the Bronze Age.\nLocation: Enys Gardens\, St Gluvius\, Penryn\, TR10 9LB – What3Words: ///diplomat.ooze.quite \nPrice: £250 per person \nThe first swords in Europe were made of bronze. They are an iconic development in the human story as social pressure led to tension between groups and individuals. Swords were as much a tool of fighting as they were status symbols. During the workshop\, participants will cast a replica of a late Bronze Age Ewart Park sword. These were made and used from 3000-2700 BP\, and have been found across Britain and occasionally further afield. With many different types of late Bronze Age sword in circulation at this time\, the Ewart Park is very much a ‘British’ style. \nWorkshop students will prepare their own mould\, before working the leather bellows on the charcoal fuelled furnace to melt bronze. They will then cast the liquid metal into their prepared moulds to produce a replica bronze age sword to take home at the end of the day. Students can then begin filing off the casting flash and start cleaning the surfaces of the sword. \nThe workshop also includes a brief talk to contextualise the Bronze Age and swords at the time. Handle-making kits will be available to purchase at the end of the workshop. \nThis workshop has been part-funded by FEAST Cornwall. \nDr James Dilley from Ancient Craft will lead the workshop. More information about him can be found here www.ancientcraft.co.uk/james-dilley \n  \nThis event is in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust – the small\, independent charity protecting Cornwall’s heritage for everyone.

SUMMARY:Bronze Age Axe Casting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Suitable for those aged 16 and over\nJoin Dr James Dilley\, an experimental archaeologist and craftsman\, to cast your own Bronze Age axe and learn more about how they were used.\nLocation: Enys Gardens\, St Gluvius\, Penryn\, TR10 9LB – What3Words: ///diplomat.ooze.quite \nPrice: £130 per person \nDiscover how some of the earliest metal tools were produced in prehistoric Britain. Just over 4000 years ago\, people started to make the first axes from copper into simple flat\, triangular shapes from an opencast mould. Soon after\, people started adding tin to make bronze which was harder and easier to cast. \nSuitable for those aged 16 and over\, this workshop will offer you the chance to hone your skills in this 4000-year-old craft and create a replica Bronze Age axe to take home. \nDuring the workshop\, attendees can choose from a selection of different axes types to cast including: \nThe flaring blade of the flanged axe – This is an iconic tool from prehistory and appears as both artefacts and in rock art at Stonehenge. Their tools were often highly decorated\, suggesting a close relationship with their owners. \nA middle Bronze Age palstave axe – These axes were developed from the earlier “flanged axe” which lacked high ridges\, a haft stopper and a loop. Metallurgy analysis shows Welsh copper can be found in over 90% of the early palstave axes found around NW Europe. \nWorkshop students will prepare their own mould\, before working the leather bellows on the charcoal-fuelled furnace to melt bronze. They will then cast the liquid metal into their prepared moulds to produce a replica Bronze Age axe to take home at the end of the day. Students can then begin filing off the casting flash\, start cleaning the surfaces of the axe and even begin decorating it with punches. \nThe day will also include a brief talk about the Bronze Age and axe development. \nThis workshop has been part-funded by FEAST Cornwall. \nDr James Dilley from Ancient Craft will lead the workshop. SUMMARY:Castilly Henge Excavation Online Community Talk - EXTRA PLACES UNEXPECTEDLY AVAILABLE
DESCRIPTION:EXTRA PLACES UNEXPECTEDLY AVAILABLE\nJoin Dr Olaf Bayer\, Senior Archaeological Investigator at Historic England\, to learn more about this upcoming archaeological excavation – a project which aims to reveal the secrets of a unique prehistoric ritual site described by experts as “Cornwall’s ancient sacred heart”.\nLocation: Online via Zoom \nPrice: FREE \nLocated just off the A30 near Bodmin\, Castilly Henge is believed to have been built during the late Neolithic period (about 3000 to 2500 BCE). It is a substantial oval earthwork with an external bank and internal ditch\, which would have formed an amphitheatre-like setting for gatherings and ritual activities. Its significance continued into the Early Bronze Age (c.2400-1500 BCE) when several high-status burial mounds or barrows were built close by. \nPrevious researchers have suggested that the site might have been used as a medieval open-air theatre known as a plen-an-gwari and then as a battery during the English Civil War. \nThe dig is informed by earthwork and geophysical surveys undertaken by Historic England’s Archaeological Investigation Team as part of a previous project in 2022. SUMMARY:Warbstow Bury Community Consultation Day
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to have your say! Following our acquisition of Warbstow Bury earlier this year\, we will be hosting a community consultation day about the site on Thursday 14th August. \nThe event will take place from 1 – 4pm at Warbstow Community Village Hall. \nWarbstow Bury is an important historic monument which sits on a prominent upland ridge at the heads of two tributaries of the River Ottery in northeast Cornwall. Thought to have been constructed around 2500 years ago\, it is Cornwall’s second-largest and best-preserved Iron Age fort. \nWe’re keen to work with the community as much as possible and would love to hear your thoughts at this consultation day. \nThere will also be free guided walks at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. Places are limited and will be given on a first-come-first-served basis on the day.

SUMMARY:Castilly Henge Excavation Community Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Olaf Bayer\, Senior Archaeological Investigator at Historic England\, to learn more about this upcoming archaeological excavation – a project which aims to reveal the secrets of a unique prehistoric ritual site described by experts as “Cornwall’s ancient sacred heart”.\nLocation: Roche Victory Hall\, Social Club\, 15 Victoria Road\, Roche\, St Austell\, PL26 8JF – What3Words: ///cobbled.solid.everybody \nPrice: FREE \nThis talk will be repeated at two additional venues local to the excavation site during the next few months. Full details to follow. \nLocated just off the A30 near Bodmin\, Castilly Henge is believed to have been built during the late Neolithic period (about 3000 to 2500 BCE). This found traces of a now-removed possible stone circle in the middle of the henge. Not all henges contain stone circles\, and there is only one other known to survive in Cornwall. \nThe dig will take place in September and October 2025.  \nThe excavation is being funded by Historic England. SUMMARY:Cornwall Heritage Trust Ranger Day
DESCRIPTION:Cornwall Heritage Trust’s Ranger Days are an exciting programme of practical volunteering opportunities at our heritage sites around Cornwall. \nTaking place at Caer Bran near Penzance\, this session will involve bracken clearance. This work has been informed by an ecological survey of the site\, which was made possible by funding from the Banister Charitable Trust. \nWork such as this is a vital part of helping us protect these ancient monuments and the natural habitats that they are part of\, and we are hugely grateful for any support you can give. \nNo experience is required and support and equipment will be provided. \nAlthough we are keen to accommodate all offers to volunteer\, on some occasions we are restricted to the number of volunteers that can participate on site. Places in these instances will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. \nClick here to register your interest \nhttps://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/TheCornwallHeritageTrustLimit/volunteersancreed-1.html
