Geevor Gala Friday 3rd August 2018
“Geevor Gala is an annual event held at Geevor Tin Mine in Pendeen to celebrate the rich heritage amongst our community. We welcomed back over 25 former employees onto the site to share their memories with our visitors. It was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyable for all those who attended. The day was full of family friendly activities including; kibble filling, hand drilling, dressing up, a vintage merry-go-round, and panning for gems. We also welcomed many musicians onto the site with Craggs Law, Cape Singers and Davey & Dyer providing an excellent musical back drop to proceedings. Cape Singers also brought a film crew along with them who are creating a documentary about Devon & Cornwall, which Geevor Gala will feature in; this will air on More 4. Our Count House Cafe supplied great food throughout the day for both our participants and visitors.
Our visitors had the chance to speak to a variety of men who worked at Geevor both above and below ground. This is one of the best ways to learn about the site, hearing information first hand from those who experienced Geevor in its prime. The day also featured demonstrations of our recently restored mining machinery, with both the Eimco Mucker and Holmans Rock Drill being displayed to our visitors by men who used them underground. These machines have been restored by our dedicated team of volunteers who undertake excellent work on site. We also held a raffle to raise money for our restoration projects. We hope to hold Geevor Gala again and make this event an annual tradition. Geevor would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to Cornwall Heritage Trust for funding this event and making it all possible”
