Victorian school facts
In Class 6 we went to Flambards to look at their Victorian village. We learnt many interesting facts about Victorian schools… here are some of them!
At schools, there are lots of things that we’d never do nowadays. Teachers could also be very strict with rules. They didn’t let their pupils write left-handed! All pupils would have to write with their right hand. They would also have to stand when the teacher enters and write the alphabet each day. The teachers even had a special hat called a dunce’s hat- it would be placed on the child’s head if they were naughty to show that shame was upon them. Every day the teacher would inspect the students’ hands to see if they were clean. Victorians didn’t have the things we have today, like textbooks, or whiteboards. The teacher used a chalkboard and children would write on slates with chalk. The money that they had was also different from ours, and it was much harder to learn and remember. They had shillings, pennies, half-pennies, pounds and guineas. And male teachers were paid more than females! So. Would you like to be in a Victorian school? I know I wouldn’t…
