All other details and times remain unchanged. We look forward to welcoming you to Sancreed Beacon for a safe and memorable Midsummer celebration. \n\n\nWe will once again be lighting up Sancreed Beacon to celebrate Midsummer\, and warmly invite you to join us.\n\nLocations: \nLighting: Sancreed Beacon\, Sancreed\, Penzance\, TR20 8QT – What3Words: ///operating.gear.polishing \nParking: Parking will be signposted on the night with stewards on hand to guide and help \nPrice: FREE \nThose who have attended our previous beacon lightings at Sancreed will know what a truly spectacular sight it is to behold\, and for those who have never been to an event like this before\, we can promise an evening you’ll never forget – it’s a tradition not to be missed!  \nSancreed Beacon was historically part of a chain of fires that could quickly send alerts around the country\, for example\, when the Spanish Armada was spotted in 1588. In more peaceful times\, the beacon has been set ablaze for national celebrations. In 1902 and 1911\, for example\, a local farmer reported burning “300 faggots of furze” (bundles of gorse) to mark the coronations of Edward VII and George V. \nThe beacon lighting is open to everyone and free to attend. Booking is not required.  \nPasties and refreshments will be on sale from 7.30pm. The beacon will be lit at 8.30pm. \n  \n\n\nAccessibility and Important Information\n\nThe route to the beacon follows uneven ground and includes a short climb\nPlease wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately for the weather conditions\nBringing a torch is recommended

DESCRIPTION:Join renowned Cornish artist and Cornwall Heritage Trust’s new Artist In Residence\, Jeremy Sanders\, for a unique\, ‘en plein air’ workshop at Sancreed Beacon.\nLocation: Sancreed Beacon\, Sancreed\, Penzance\, TR20 8QT – What3Words: ///lows.button.riverboat \nParking: \nSancreed Beacon South Lay-by – What3Words: ///users.equality.montage \nSancreed Beacon North Lay-by – What3Words: ///climber.credited.sprinter \nTime: 1pm – 5pm \nPrice: £35 \nThis four-hour session provides you with an opportunity to increase your observation and grow your artistic confidence working quickly and responding to the ever changing light and natural elements. \nJeremy will start with an hour-long demonstration painting in oils\, discussing his techniques and the tools needed to paint outdoors in whatever medium of choice. Then it’s your chance to get painting with Jeremy on-hand to help and guide you. \n \nYou will need to provide and use your own materials for this session\, whether a simple classic sketchbook or a full-on artist’s pochade.\nJeremy will also provide a few extra boards should you want to try your hand at oils on his easel. \nThis is a small group session\, limited to just 15 participants. \nSancreed Beacon is one of 20 sites cared for by Cornwall Heritage Trust and offers both a spectacular view across Mounts Bay and a wide variety of flora\, fauna and historic remains. A perfect setting for an en plein air session. \nWhat to bring: \n\nAll equipment and materials that you wish to use during the workshop\, from a sketchbook to an easel.\nSomething to sit on – a fold up chair\, or rug\, or cushion. Whatever you will be comfortable using whilst creating. Please remember the ground and weather may be damp\, wet or muddy.\nNo refreshments will be provided\, so please bring along any drinks or snacks you may want or need.\n\nPlease note: \n\nThis event takes place entirely outdoors and involves some walking on Sancreed Beacon which has uneven ground and a slight incline.\nPlease wear footwear suitable for walking and dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day. \nComposting toilet facilities available on site.\n\nThis event is in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust – the independent charity protecting Cornwall’s heritage for everyone. \n \nAbout Jeremy Sanders\nBorn in South Wales in 1969\, Jeremy studied at St Martin’s School of Art\, graduated from the University of the West Country with a first-class honours degree\, and was a Prince’s Youth Business Trust gold medal winner. His work has featured widely on television programmes including Kay Mellor’s “Between the sheets” and Julie Burchill’s drama “Sugar rush”. The fashion brand Fat Face have used his paintings for a world-wide campaign\, and he has completed commissions for NatWest Insurance\, Saga Ruby\, Tui Celebration and Cunard Queen Victoria cruise liners. The last of these was launched by HRH the Prince of Wales\, who has personally acknowledged Jeremy’s mentoring work for the Prince’s Trust.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the stunning historic landscape at Sancreed Beacon and create a beautiful folded concertina book to take home with our current Artist in Residence\, Sue Lewington.\nLocation: Sancreed Beacon\, Sancreed\, Penzance\, TR20 8QT – What3Words: ///lows.button.riverboat \nParking: \nSancreed Beacon South Lay-by – What3Words: ///users.equality.montage \nSancreed Beacon North Lay-by – What3Words: ///climber.credited.sprinter \nPrice: £20 \nSue is an artist and illustrator\, mostly based around the West Penwith Peninsula and on the Isles of Scilly. Her inspiration comes from the energy of the landscape\, the seas and the skies and the frayed edges of the coastline. \nThe workshop will begin with an hour-long guided walk around Sancreed Beacon led by Cornwall Heritage Trust’s Countryside Ranger\, Hollie Ferris. The site is a beautiful stretch of semi-natural moorland which has been used by people since at least the Bronze Age. \nPeople have been drawn to this site’s spectacular views and natural resources for thousands of years. The hill contains a number of archaeological remains and it is a haven for wildlife. Sue will be on hand throughout the walk to discuss the creative inspiration this special place can offer.  \nYou will then head to Sancreed Village Hall for a two-hour art workshop you will create a folded concertina artist’s book in which you will recreate the feel and sights of your walk through sketching\, painting and writing. \n“Not everything can be painted\, birdsong\, a snatch of conversation\, the passage of time through the landscape.” Sue Lewington \nTimings \n12.45pm – Arrival and welcome\n1pm – Guided walk\n2pm – Art workshop\n4pm – Depart \nAll materials and paper will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own. \nTea\, coffee and saffron buns will be provided. \nThe walk involves uneven ground\, steps and slopes. DESCRIPTION:The final instalment of our series of public beacon lightings to celebrate our 40th anniversary.\nLocation: Brazier\, Sancreed Beacon\, Sancreed\, Penzance\, TR20 8QT – What3Words: ///operating.gear.polishing \nParking: What3Words: ///consults.mile.safely \nPrice: FREE \nThe event will involve the lighting of a specially commissioned mini-brazier to culminate the end of its journey around Cornwall Heritage Trust’s historic sites in celebration of the charity’s 40th anniversary. This will be used to light the 12-foot tall brazier which sits permanently at the site as part of our annual Midsummer Beacon Lighting.  \nRefreshments\, including pasties priced at £5\, will be served from 7.30pm. These will be served on a first-come first-served basis. \nThe official lighting will take place at 8.30pm. \nAbout the site \nSancreed Beacon is a beautiful stretch of semi-natural moorland which has been used by people since at least the Bronze Age. The hill contains a number of archaeological remains\, including two Bronze Age hilltop cairns\, one containing a burial cist as well as a round house settlement with associated small fields and a pasture boundary. It was the first historic site to be taken into our charity’s care and was purchased in September 1985. \n  \nThis event is in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust – the small\, independent charity protecting Cornwall’s heritage for everyone.
