What if heritage could help young people feel more connected, confident and supported?

Cornwall’s ancient landscapes and historic monuments are so much more than remnants of the past. They are powerful tools for wellbeing, belonging and building a sense of place.
This summer, we’ve seen that in action and the impact it has through our Carefree Wellbeing Programme.
In partnership with the charity Carefree Cornwall, this programme supports young people who are in and leaving care by giving them opportunities to explore historic places, build confidence outdoors and discover a Cornwall that feels like theirs.

Over the last four months, participants have visited mining remains, explored breathtaking clifftops and taken part in creative workshops focused on mindfulness and reflection. These experiences are so much more than a fun day out – they help young people develop independence and a deeper connection to the landscapes and stories around them.
When we asked participants what they enjoyed most, their answers were wonderfully simple: visiting new places, learning about Cornwall’s history, meeting new people and making friends.
Here’s some of the work they created to reflect on their visits…

Cornwall’s heritage is a living story. It needs care, investment and community participation — and it has the power to shape futures as much as it preserves the past. Programmes like Carefree show how historic places can support wellbeing, strengthen social connection and help young people feel part of Cornwall’s story.
