Ever wondered what it’s like to uncover the past for a living? Join Cornwall Heritage Trust for a fun and interactive archaeology discovery session where young explorers (aged 8-14) can learn about the fascinating world of archaeology and the skills used to investigate our shared history.

Through a series of hands-on activities, participants will discover how archaeologists investigate sites, identify artefacts and interpret clues from the past. They’ll even have the chance to curate their own mini museum display, bringing together the objects and stories they’ve uncovered during the day.

Whether you’re already passionate about history or simply curious about what lies beneath the ground, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn and discover how our understanding of the past is pieced together.

During the day, participants will:

  • Discover what archaeologists do and how archaeological investigations are carried out
  • Learn about the different stages of an archaeological project
  • Examine and identify replica artefacts and archaeological finds
  • Explore how objects help us understand people’s lives in the past
  • Create and curate their own mini museum display
  • Develop observation, interpretation and detective skills through hands-on activities

Parents and Guardians:

One accompanying adult is welcome to stay for the duration of the event at no additional cost. Alternatively, participants may be left in the care of Cornwall Heritage Trust staff and volunteers for the session, provided that emergency contact details are supplied at registration.

About the site

Tregonning Hill is a great granite hill overlooking Mount’s Bay which has a diverse archaeological landscape with monuments dating back to the Bronze Age and is known as the birthplace of the British china clay industry. Much of the site is designated a Scheduled Monument and all of it is within the Cornish Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

The site has a multi-period archaeological landscape which includes a wide range of historic monuments, while the summit of the hill is crowned spectacularly by the hillfort known in legend as Castle Pencair.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll send you a reminder email closer to the event with everything you need to know, including directions, timings and other practical information.

This event is part of the Council for British Archaeology’s annual Festival of Archaeology, and in aid of Cornwall Heritage Trust – the independent charity protecting Cornwall’s heritage for everyone.
