Built in 1829 and referred to as the Temple Of The Winds but was better known as the Newport Town Hall. It was built to cover the broken shaft of The Newport Cross as remains today.
The site and cross is of great historic significance to the Newport area because from the year 1529 (Henry VIII) to 1831 (William IV) it was the spot where the two members of Parliament for Newport were declared and their election celebrated by the inhabitants of St. Thomas Hamlet.
In more recent times it has been used to proclaim the news of a monarch ascending to the throne or their jubilee celebrations.
