Those who have attended our previous beacon lightings at Sancreed will know what a truly spectacular sight it is to behold, and for those who have never been to an event like this before, we can promise an evening you’ll never forget – it’s a tradition not to be missed!
Sancreed Beacon was historically part of a chain of fires that could quickly send alerts around the country, for example, when the Spanish Armada was spotted in 1588. In more peaceful times, the beacon has been set ablaze for national celebrations. In 1902 and 1911, for example, a local farmer reported burning “300 faggots of furze” (bundles of gorse) to mark the coronations of Edward VII and George V.
The beacon lighting is open to everyone and free to attend. Booking is not required.
Pasties and refreshments will be on sale from 7.30pm. The beacon will be lit at 8.30pm.
